How can myopia be effectively prevented?

The eye is an extremely delicate organ. Once damaged, it is difficult, or even impossible, to repair. Therefore, we should protect our eyes well. So, what are some effective ways to protect our eyes?

1. Take good care of your eyes

The eyes are one of the most overworked organs in the human body. In daily life, it is essential to maintain good eye care and nutritional supply. Common eye care products include eye patches, eye masks, eye ointments, and eye drops. These products can effectively relieve eye fatigue and prevent myopia from worsening. Lutein, carotene, and anthocyanin are essential nutrients for the eyes, especially lutein, which is like the ink in a printer; without it, the eyes cannot function normally.

2. Pay attention to eye usage

Pay attention to the lighting when looking at objects. When reading, writing, or engaging in any eye-straining work, there should be sufficient light. Avoid reading, writing, or working in dim light or moonlight. Pay attention to the duration of eye use. When reading, browsing, or engaging in eye-straining work, take a break every 45-60 minutes. Rest your eyes and look into the distance at green scenery to relax the ciliary muscles. Pay attention to your posture when using your eyes. When reading or writing, sit upright. Do not read while lying down. Also, avoid reading on cars or trains to prevent excessive eye fatigue.

3. Prevent diseases

Many eye diseases are transmitted directly or indirectly, such as trachoma and acute conjunctivitis. If these eye diseases are not treated promptly, vision will gradually deteriorate, leading to blindness. In fact, all systemic diseases can affect the eyes to varying degrees. Blood diseases, kidney diseases, hypertension, and endocrine diseases can all affect the eyes. Tuberculosis, in particular, can cause blindness if it affects the eyes.

4. Reduce ultraviolet radiation

Minimize contact with electronic devices such as televisions, computers, and game consoles that emit radiation harmful to the eyes. The X-rays emitted by CRTs can significantly deplete rhodopsin in the retina, leading to a noticeable decrease in vision. It is best to use LCD monitors for computers to reduce the damage of electromagnetic waves to the eyes. Students who frequently play video games are more likely to damage their eyesight. Students with low vision who have played video games since childhood may find that even corrective lenses cannot improve their vision, because the function of the retina and macula has been damaged.
